” The Uusikaupunki railway” is the part of the Finnish railway network between the Turku Central Railway Station and the island of Hangonsaari in the town of Uusikaupunki. Passenger traffic on the railway was disbanded in 1992. After this the railway has mainly served the purposes of freight transport. Different plans to restore the passenger traffic have been made, beginning the early 2000’s, and the electrification of the railway, starting in 2019, has been seen as a prerequisite for the restoration. However, transport benefits alone are nowadays rarely adequate in the political decision making to justify large transport investments. The investments are expected to have wider nontransport effects for example on the area’s economy. This thesis studies what kind of different impacts the passenger traffic on the Uusikaupunki railway is expected to have and how these expected impacts vary in different regions. This thesis combines information from both the official reports of the proposed passenger traffic and the enquiry, answered by the communal councilmembers of the study area. According to this thesis, the passenger traffic is expected to unify the Vakka-Suomi region with the Turku urban area as one functional urban region. However, the functional urban region itself is expected to have wider by-products. According to the official reports, the passenger traffic would change the whole urban structure of the region. This idea, however, isn’t highlighted in the survey results. The survey on its part highlights the passenger traffic’s impact on commuting. The councilmembers of the Turku region highlight the benefits of passenger traffic when commuting between Turku and Uusikaupunki. The councilmembers of Uusikaupunki and rest of the Vakka-Suomi -region do not highlight any effects as heavily as their Turku region counterparts. According to the survey, the over-all interest towards the passenger traffic seems to be higher in Vakka-Suomi than in Turku urban area. The councilmembers of the Turku area may prioritize other transport projects, such as the” One-hour train” between Turku and Helsinki.
